VCS was founded using A Beka Publishers. This is a well known Christian curriculum that is widely used across the country in private Christian schools and with students who are home-schooled. A Beka continues as our standard for scope and sequence. We continue to strive in finding the best Christian educational resources that are well researched, challenging, and developmentally appropriate. Examples include, but are not limited to, the ACSI and BJU curriculums. Our curriculum committee will use their judgment to make adjustments when deemed appropriate.

Field trips are important to us at VCS and we try to schedule at least two a year. We will have special speakers and presentations throughout the school year. These events are in the context of chapel times, show and tell, assemblies, and individual classroom projects. If parents have a special skill or interest, they are encouraged to set up a time to share with their child’s class. When leaving school grounds, we need the participation of the parents and other volunteers for transportation.

Preschool and Kindergarten grading scales and performance evaluations are at the discretion of the teacher. Teachers are required to report observations and progress in a written form each quarter. 1st - 12th grade uses the VCS grading scale:

A (100-93) B (92-84) C (83-76) D (75-68) F (below 68)

Grade reporting will happen on a regular schedule: report cards will be mailed to parents at the conclusion of each semester and progress reports will be issued mid semester.

A good time to quickly connect with faculty is first thing in the morning. If you are in need of more time, please schedule a conference with the teacher. Regular conferences will be initiated by the teacher at least twice a year.

Students will be promoted to the next grade when a grade point average in all subjects for the year is a 68 GPA or better. In all possible retention cases, several things are taken into account: past performance, SAT scores, individual needs, maturity, homework completion, parental input. The final decision lies with the faculty team including, but not limited to, the current teacher, future teacher and School Director.

At VCS, the responsibility for scholastic achievement is placed on the students. Efforts will be made at school to keep assignments within reasonable limits. The following are guidelines that teachers are asked to follow.

Up to 1/2 hour in lower elementary grades

Up to 1 hour in upper elementary grades

1-3 hours in Jr. & Sr. high
